Ephiphone of Love

by Franci V. Orellana

The way Veronica and Kyle met was a little unusual. Unlike many couples, she met Kyle’s dad, Ralph before she met him. Ralph and Veronica worked in the same place, which is where they met. Like many workplaces, people tended to talk about other employees. It was not long enough until Ralph heard the rumor, “Veronica only likes white guys."

That made Ralph think about his son Kyle, who had just moved a couple of months ago to Glenwood. He'd come to Colorado to enter a management training program with Wal-Mart. Since he was new in the Valley, he didn’t have any friends. Ralph thought that the two together would make a perfect match.

One day Ralph approached Veronica and asked her, “Veronica, is it true that you only like white guys?”

Her only response to this was a smile on her face.

He went on, “No, seriously, do you? I heard some rumors in the store in the store on how you only like white guys. Is that true?”

Veronica’s face turned a little red, but she could not stop laughing. She finally said, “Yeah, as funny as it may sound, it is true. I only like white guys. Why?”

To which he said, “Because my son is white, and I want you to meet him. Do you want to meet him? Trust me, he is as white as it can get.”

There was a concern on Veronica’s mind as to why he wanted her to meet his son. She had never been close to Ralph, so why would he pick her and not anybody else? A little scared, she answered, “Sure.” She started to imagine what this guy would look like. All her brain could come up with was some tall, fat, dirty, old-looking guy with a long beard. This only scared her even more, plus Veronica didn’t feel like she needed any more friends. She talked to a lot of people that she met at Wal-Mart, but she had only two best friends. Her two best friends were her party friends, and they would accompany her everywhere she went. Meeting new people was always an issue for Veronica, because she didn’t know how to act in front of them, and it was too formal. To her, old friends were fun, and joking around with them was easier than with semi-strangers.

Ralph finally brought her a picture of Kyle. When she saw it, she thought, “Okay, he looks kind of cute. We will see.”

Of course, she had to show her friends what this guy looked like. As usual her friends laughed when they saw the picture, criticizing every single detail they could see on his face, until they summarized their opinions by saying, “He is ugly-ass looking, especially with his big nose.” Everybody nearby laughed at their comments, especially when someone said out loud, “Can you imagine yourself kissing him? His big nose is going to get in your way.”

After all the comments, Veronica was regretting the decision of going to meet the guy. But she felt obligated to go because she had already agreed to go. To go or not to go was not an option anymore. As the time passed and the meeting date was getting closer, the scarier it seemed to get. Then she finally said to herself, “I need to stop thinking about this because whether I want to go or not, I have to go. There is nothing I can do to get myself out of this. Oh God, why do I get myself into this kind of crap?”

The evening of the date finally arrived. Veronica worked until seven p.m. The plan was to go to the bowling alley in Eagle after work. When she got there, she didn’t know who to look for. She obviously didn’t even remember what the guy in the picture looked like. When she walked to the door, she saw a young, handsome guy standing at the door. He politely asked her, “Are you Veronica?”

She said, “Yeah, are you Kyle?”

He responded to her: “Yeah.”

Veronica thought, “Oh God, he is either going to be heaven or hell.” He surely was as white as vanilla ice cream.

Veronica and Kyle had a lot more dates after this one. After being friends for five months, they started dating regularly. Ralph was happy to see that he had found a girlfriend for his lonely son. It had never crossed his mind that the two were going to be so close and so in love with each other.

Veronica learned that sometimes meeting new people isn’t so bad; Kyle also taught her that sometimes even when you don’t need more friends, there are people who might want your friendship. Friendship wasn’t the only thing he taught her because how to love him was the most important one, and until today he is still the love of her life.
